The parents of a one-year-old girl who got sick during a sailing trip around the world are defending their decision to sail with young children.
A Navy ship rescued Eric and Charlotte Kaufman, along with their daughters Lyra and 3-year-old Cora after Lyra developed a fever and a rash over most of her body, and wasn’t responding to medications.
The family sent a satellite call for help to the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday when their 36-foot sailboat lost steering and communications about 900 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Four California Air National Guard members parachuted into the water and reached the boat Thursday night, and stayed with the family until the USS Vandegrift reached the boat on Sunday.
